High Quality Narrative Essay Writing in 5 Steps

One of the specific features of narrative essay is that it does not simply summarizes the information gathered while research. The aim of this type of essay is to share personal experience gained and make the readers draw their own conclusions. The writer should guide the reader instead of persuading him/her to take some position.

In order to come up with a professional narrative essay, the writer should follow 5 simple steps. They are:

1. Remain Clear

Clarity is what makes your paper successful. Avoid using complex words and sentence structures, as they will make your paper difficult to understand. Make sure your points and ideas are clearly outlined within paragraphs.

For example, the following sentence can be improved by slightly changing it.

I had never visited a concert before and I was both excited and nervous at the same time due to the fact that I was surrounded by a tremendous crowd of people.

Improved: I have never been to the concert before. As a result, I was both excited and nervous because of a great number of people surrounding me.

2. Be Precise. Describe Things that Matter

It would be better to write:

Everyone was watching TV as I entered the room with lots of pictures on the walls.

Instead of: After I entered the room, I saw that everyone was watching TV. Then I noticed many pictures on the walls of the room.

3. Do not Write Your Paper in the Second Person

Narrative essay can be characterized by the fact that the writer is the one who had experienced some events. As a result, second person narrative should be avoided.

It will not be correct to say:

As you enter the room, you see people watching TV. Then you can see pictures on the walls.

However, using Present Simple will not be a mistake.

4. Pay Attention to the Word Choice

Regardless of the fact that narrative essay is an academic writing; do not try to sound too boring. It is even allowed to use slang alongside with idioms and phrases you use in everyday speech, if they are not overused. Moreover, avoid using passive voice constructions in the paper.

For example, you may use word car instead of automobile.

5. Make Sure to Avoid Using too Many References

Standard formats, including MLA, APA, Chicago, etc., require using citations in the paper. However, it is recommended to limit the number of references in narrative essays. In case you used some work that was helpful, you can cite it at the end of your paper on the Works Consulted page. It is always better for narrative essay to explain your thoughts instead of referring to the statements done by someone else.

Example: “Lord, what fools these mortals be” (Gaiman 1989), was the only thought when I saw people jumping at the concert even though the music was not playing.

Improved: When I saw the fans of the band jumping even though the music was not playing, I reminded a Shakespeare’s quote used by Neil Gaiman in one of his books: “Lord, what fools these mortals be”. But when I saw band’s lead singer throwing some merchandise to people in the crowd, I finally realized what they were doing. The fans were trying to catch some souvenirs as a reminder of a great time spent during the event.

So, by following the tips provided above, you will be able to write a high quality narrative essay without problems!
